Three years later he saw his first opera, The Magic Flute, at Covent Garden.Īround the time of the Coronation he developed an interest in British composers and during a rehearsal of Vaughan Williams’s masque Job at the Royal Festival Hall found himself next to the composer, who signed his copy of the score. “It was rather prophetic, because the music of the Russian nationalists has been mother’s milk to me ever since,” he told Fanfare magazine. His 10th birthday was marked with a visit to the Royal Albert Hall, where the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Thomas Beecham performed a concert including Rimsky-Korsakov’s May Night overture. It was not until he was at Westminster School, towards the end of the war, that he heard his first notes of classical music in the form of Mozart. With war looming Margaret took David and his sister to live in what he described as “wildest west Wales on a very primitive farm no electricity or gas or running water”.
